Archimandrite Barnabas Burton

(1915 – 1996)

Early Life & Path to Orthodoxy: Born Ian Burton in Pennal, Wales, Fr. Barnabas entered the Orthodox Church in Paris in 1960. Following theological studies, he was tonsured a monk, ordained as a priest, and elevated to Archimandrite.

Missionary & Monastic Work: Returning to Great Britain in 1964, Fr. Barnabas spent decades establishing Orthodox hermitages, monasteries (including St. Elias in New Mills), and parishes across the region.

Spiritual Precept: Known for his practical, deep spiritual life, Fr. Barnabas taught that our Faith is “to be lived rather than talked about, to be prayed rather than preached, to be listened to rather than dialogued over.”
