Saturday is traditionally chosen for remembering the departed because it is the day Christ lay resting in the tomb before His Resurrection.

While individual memorial services occur throughout the year (such as on the 3rd, 9th, and 40th days after a death), Soul Saturdays are set aside to pray universally for all the departed faithful - from Adam and Eve down to the present day.
